High-Security Fencing Installation – Data Centre Perimeter Protection

Project:

The client tasked Security Fencing Services with the supply and installation of a fully integrated perimeter protection package. Due to the facility’s strategic importance and the sensitive nature of its data, both the design and implementation phases were governed by enhanced confidentiality protocols.

The specification included multiple fencing applications and access control systems, each selected to meet different risk zones around the facility, including acoustic performance, forced entry resistance, and secure vehicular access.

Challenge:

The project presented several complex challenges across the site’s perimeter and access infrastructure:

• Multi-Layered Threat Resistance: Inner and outer perimeter zones required different levels of security, including SR2 and SR3 mesh fencing systems to delay and deter forced entry using a range of tools.
• Controlled Access: All access points had to be fortified with SR3-rated automated security gates, offering motorised entry for authorised personnel and fleet vehicles, integrated with advanced access control protocols and ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition).
• Secure Traffic Management: The perimeter design had to incorporate vehicle mitigation measures, including rising bollards and reinforced traffic control barriers to prevent hostile vehicle intrusion.
• Acoustic and Visual Screening: In line with environmental and planning requirements, acoustic fencing was specified along public-facing boundaries to reduce operational noise and protect the visual privacy of the facility.
• Zonal Demarcation and General Security: Lower-risk perimeter zones required Profile V mesh fencing to clearly define boundaries while maintaining visibility for surveillance systems and reducing material costs.

Solution:

Security Fencing Services executed a phased delivery model, coordinating with the client’s construction and security teams to minimise operational disruption and maintain confidentiality throughout the project.

• SR3 mesh fencing was deployed around the primary data halls and core infrastructure zones, delivering high resistance to forced entry attempts in line with LPS 1175 (C5) standards.
• SR2 mesh fencing was installed in surrounding buffer zones, creating a layered security design with varying levels of resistance and response delay.
• SR3-certified automated gates were integrated at vehicular access points, combined with electronic access controls and site-wide surveillance, offering high-speed operation, anti-tailgating safeguards, and monitored gate status alerts.
• Traffic management systems were implemented, including PAS 68 crash-rated bollards and reinforced rising arm barriers, to manage and filter all vehicle traffic.
• Acoustic fencing panels were installed along public-facing boundaries, achieving up to 32 dB noise reduction while maintaining a discreet appearance.
• Profile V mesh fencing was deployed along general boundary lines, combining anti-climb features with cost-effective deployment and compatibility with CCTV and alarm systems.

This comprehensive solution ensured total perimeter integrity while meeting the client’s exacting security and regulatory requirements. The project was delivered within budget and ahead of schedule.
